Tech-house futurist Stefan Goldmann has made it his mission to stay a few pulses ahead of the herd, never content to merely churn out beats for the dancing masses. The veteran Berlin-based musician cut his teeth as one of Germany’s rare drum ‘n’ bass DJs before finding his groove as a versatile ‘contemporary art music’ producer with a cult following. His avant-garde undertakings are wide-ranging, with the single unifying thread being an unwavering, pitch-bending interest in deconstructing, remixing and otherwise recontextualizing rhythmic parameters. Beyond these conceptual reimaginings (from Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps to Santiago Salazar’s Arcade), Goldman has released lauded works on Perlon, Classic and Cocoon, and over the years fine-tuned his curatorial acumen before launching his Macro imprint in 2007. This leading avant-techno label has propelled the careers of peers such as Peter Kruder, KiNK and analogue techno band Elektro Guzzi. As a solo artist, the German Grammy-nominated musician has also racked up underground club hits, scored a ballet for the Nationaltheater Mannheim, and recorded a stellar live album as an artist-in-residence at Kyoto’s Honen-In Temple. Since 2011, this author and music theorist has also held a residency at the mythical Panorama Bar/Berghain and penned a bimonthly column for its program flyer. A MUTEK programmers’ pick, Goldmann will deliver a live festival set at EM15.
