Montréal-based interdisciplinary video and design artist Johnny Ranger (a.k.a. Jean Ranger) creates full-scale multimedia shows and live VJ sets, captivating with open-ended narratives, image collages and a poetic angle on cinematic tropes. As the founder and artistic director of new-media art lab Mindroots and former artistic director for Montréal media company Moment Factory (for whom he also created two video segments for the 2012 Madonna Live MDNA tour), Ranger has honed his craft since 2000, creating multi-screen projections and collaborating with choreographers such as Edouard Lock of LA LA LA Human Steps, directors such as Bernard Hebert, musicians, media art centers and design studios, exhibiting throughout Canada and internationally. His hour-long immersive film Six Mil Antennas debuted in the fall of 2013 at the 360° surround-sound Satosphère dome at Montréal’s Society for Arts and Techology, merging the mediums of film, graphic novels, music videos and contemporary art. Ranger continues to push his experiment in interactive and sensorially-encompassing projects at performances and festival appearances worldwide.
