MORE: Alongside his instrumental experimentation, he’s made official remixes of songs by M83, Justice, Air, Phoenix and other electro bands

Jackson Fourgeaud is an inventor of genre-bent music and the singular equipment to make it. Through resonance and algorithms, his elaborate metallic instruments translate the light spectrum into sound frequencies. He plays with a necessary physicality, his music a semi-improvised metaphysical conversation between musical gesture, sculptural instruments and the possibilities within light. In his newest performance, Light Metal Music, Jackson manipulates metal surfaces and strings to articulate rainbowed prisms of light into dark techno drones and ethereal melody humming with raw electric current.

As Jackson and his Computerband since 1999 – and before that in a rock band at the age of 12 and making electronic acid-house by high school – he skews electro-pop with house-y funk, grinding techno and clanging heavy bass, most recently incorporating his tailor-made instruments and effects triggers into a set that playfully disrupts genre boundaries. Along with remixing indie-electro-pop artists and fellow electronic producers, he's played back-to-back with Boys Noize in a trance-techno Boiler Room Berlin DJ Set in 2014, though his latest solo performances more closely resemble living art installations with a futuristic sci-fi allure.

Jackson has brought his electro-acoustic workshop Instrumentarium to Sonar and the Music Biennale in Venice, inventing new sound and light musical instruments that he then plays in concert. He originally created Light Metal Music in 2015 for Parisian gallery Kamel Mennour (accompanying artist Daniel Buren's room-transforming exhibition Au fur et à mesure, travaux in situ et situés), and recently performed at Paris’s 104 Cent Quatre cultural centre. Jackson comes to MUTEK with a new interpretation of Light Metal Music specific to the festival.

Jackson is a 2016 participant of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, which is supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union.
