A child of Perestroika, the electronic music apprenticeship of Dasha Rush began at Moscow raves when she was a teenager. She started DJing at 14, dabbled in piano, and left for France when she was 16. An ambitious experimentalist, and fiercely independent, she continued to teach herself machine music, worked in fashion and sought out multidisciplinary collisions with theatre, dance and installation.
Her recorded output over the last decade marks a varied adventure through several synthesized musical genres: part ambient, part techno, all open ended and evolving, and always concerned with creating feeling. Though she heads up her own labels – Full Panda for more rhythm oriented releases, and Hunger to Create, where anything can happen – her knack for sophisticated clubby cadences also found favour on Adam X’s Sonic Groove label, and her recent liminal-state inspired album Sleepstep came out on Raster-Noton after prodding from Carsten Nicolai.
As a performer her schedule has been relentless for the last few years – Rush’s estimable command of clubspace will be in full effect in the live set she brings to Métropolis at MUTEK 2016.
Presented in collaboration with the Banff Centre.
