International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music
Friday night’s NOCTURNE 3 welcomes the weekend with stand-out performances from artists who’ve carved their own spaces between genres and niches, co-presented with Resident Advisor. Hear the folk-music-from-the-moon sound of Sandro Perri's new OFF WORLD project with Lorenz Peter of Processor; the enchanting viola de gamba player and pop-dubbist COLLEEN in a set of emotionally textured instrumental compositions laced with machine rhythms; German producer and musician BURNT FRIEDMAN’s dynamic, (poly)rhythmic live performance stationed in the middle of the room; a debut live set of astutely produced and propulsive rhythms and vocals from footwork marvel JLIN; and downtempo bliss in live instrumentation and digitized samples drawing on classic jazz, blues and juke from London-based producer ROMARE.
The second stage turns into a chamber of textural, ambient and emotive musics. Mitchell Akiyama returns to the festival after an almost 15 year absence, reanimating his long running project with Tony Boggs, DÉSORMAIS; Mexican duo AND THE END OF EVERYTHING unfurl rushes of cinematic sentiment; delicate machine songs by PARAPHONIQUE; the singing circuits and feedback of CHRISTIAN CARRIÈRE’S no-input mixer compositions; and emotive ambient works by Arcade Fire member JEREMY GARA.
