Carrying almost equal influence from disco, house, funk and boogie it’s not easy to pigeonhole Harvey Sutherland’s music nor should you want to. Energetic, funky and overflowing with positive vibes it’s no surprise that this music originates from sunny Australia. Making great use of his Juno keyboard the live keys are a big part of his sound, augmented with claps, hi-hats and kicks that echo both the seventies and the eighties. His sounds show the producer wearing his influences firmly on his sleeve and his arrangements are distinctive, minimal and restrained.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia he started out as a member of // THIS THING //, a now well-known local DJ party collective and associated label This Thing Records & Tapes. Having released singles under the names Mike Katz and Mike Kay he eventually adopted the pseudonym Harvey Sutherland and was later signed to Motor City Drum Ensemble's MCDE label for his 12” Bermuda. A talented keyboard player and producer and prolific performer he is currently also one half of the techno duo Coup d'état, with another Melbourne producer Kane Ikin, and a live trio with analog drums and strings as Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda. He also runs his own label Clarity Recordings, focussing on promoting contemporary Australian music.
Having inquired after him in previous years, MUTEK is excited to finally bring Harvey Sutherland's infectious musical charms to North American shores.
