Deeply unsettling and sonically uncompromising, Deathprod is an assault to at least three of the senses. Moving between an arctic stillness and brutal sonic vibrations, his music travels at a glacial creep, the compositions slowly unfolding and sometimes eventually blindsiding and engulfing the listener/spectator. Granular, ominous and icy cold, his is the sound of dread evoking the feeling of being stranded at the end of earth with a glimmer of distant hope, never to arrive.
Hailing from Røros in Norway, Helge Sten is an active figure on the Oslo music scene and he has been making music as Deathprod since 1991. He often credits himself on record as “audio virus” an obtuse term to describe his subversive and unique mix of homemade electronics, magnetic tape, ring modulators, theremins and samplers. His sound world shares affinities with his geography and it's not a coincidence that black metal is deeply implicated with Norway. A founding member of noise-drone, experimental jazz band Supersilent, he was also a past keyboardist in folkloric prog rock group Motorpsycho. Active on many fronts, he has developed multimedia installations, performances, remixes, live improvisations, and as a producer, he's worked with a plethora of artists ranging from Biosphere, Jenny Hval and Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen.
Having visited North America for the first time this past spring, MUTEK is proud to present the premiere of Deathprod in Canada as he delivers a set of dangerous sound design and devastating frequency.
