Whistles, tropical beats, latin percussion, carnival rhythms and brass samples galore — Borchi’s sample-heavy mission is to bring the atmosphere of the street carnivals of Latin America, specifically of Northern Brazil and the New Orleans Mardi Gras, to the urban dancefloor.
Originally from the Coyoacán district of Mexico City, Pablo Borchi started out as an MC in Mexican live hip hop outfit Beat Buffet, and one of the masterminds behind the popular Day Off music festival. He now manages the netlabel Cassette Blog with Andrés Oddone, who is also his partner in the duo Retumba. An avid and enthusiastic remixer, Borchi has bootleg-remixed Anchorsong, along with a plethora of underground latino artists and more famous names like MIA. For the most part instrumental, occasional Spanish-language lyrics and even sometimes live french horn liven up the proceedings, but no idea is too outré for Borchi, he's even covered the Star Wars theme in brass band style.
Accessible, playful and infused with summer vibes, Borchi's samplemania and Latin sway captures the spirit of Mexican street and social life and lands it on our outdoor stage in Montréal.
