Recontextualizing dub, house, ambient and found sound, EvilTapes composes heavily cinematic tracks with an affection for live instrumentation, drum machines and movie dialogue.
An engineer and sound designer, he has become a prominent figure on the contemporary Mexican music scene due to his role as one of the country’s leading live sound engineers and has worked on several prominent music festivals including MUTEK, BESTIA and NRMAL, manning the controls for live acts ranging from Ben Frost, Nils Frahm, Robert Henke and Richie Hawtin. A one time assistant to Jack Endino of Sub Pop fame, he returned to Mexico after honing his audio engineering chops for several years in Seattle. His interest in electronic music began in 1995 when he was just 15 years old and his older brother took him to The Pervert’s Club in Mexico City. At 18 he started DJing, and obsessive interests in sound design, production, writing, arranging and performing swiftly followed.
Following his hypnotic 3D sound performance for MUTEK.MX 2016, EvilTapes lands in Montréal with a live set certain to be the perfect soundtrack for the outdoor stage.
