Melding his own collection of beats with instrumentals and synth atmospherics, OSB can leap from melodic musings to wild vocals and experiments in distortion. No matter what form of agitation or ambience the music takes, it has a way of drawing listeners in through sonic hypnosis edged in a dark undercurrent of humour.
A heavyweight drummer counted among the experimenters in Montréal's multi-textured, world-travelling post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the cornerstone of the Constellation label, and with outsider rock trio Exhaust, Girt turned his obsession with rhythm into solo project 1-Speed Bike. Looped and manipulated recordings of his drumming merge with ambient melodic sampling, humour and a harsh-reality pathos (his song titles also tell that tale) on his turn-of-the-millennium first EP, Droopy Butt Begone. Releases adhering to label Broklyn Beats' penchant for “corrupted electronic noise” followed, along with more corruptions under pseudonym Bottleskup Flenkenkenmike. After living in Amsterdam and then settling in a woodsy cabin outside Montréal, Girt's recent music has launched into speedy drum textures that give way to slow-mo dub and phasing synths.
OSB rolls into MUTEK as musician, producer, DJ and mobile soundsystem all-in-one, seizing attention not by force but with a driving intensity braced by enlightened sonic exploration.
