Simultaneously vulnerable and defiant, Valeda crafts haunting, often delicate multi-layered soundscapes that are punctuated with abrasive stabs of percussion, tense builds and deconstructed elements of club music.
With a formal background in visual arts, Lamoureux studied photography and studio arts at Concordia in Montréal (including a semester at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Lyon, France). Her interest in music began in her early teens when she began songwriting using piano and guitar before later developing a private obsession with electronic music. A member of local A/V collective susy.technology and a keen participant in activist circles, she has been producing her own music for several years now, folding in her social awareness, personal experience and artistic practice. Emotionally potent and expressive, her sets are augmented with intricate layers of live and pre-recorded vocals used for the most part as musical textures. Brimming with the conflicting expressions of anger, optimism, fragility and resistance, thematically Valeda explores identity, sexuality, trauma and power in and through music.
A debut release under her belt on the susy.technology label, and a run of recent live performances, Valeda takes the stage for the first time at MUTEK, unleashing a set of her intimate and engrossing song craft.
