Fusing experimental music and conceptual art movements into a beast of deviant BPMs, N.M.O. wrangles a staggering array of percussion and minimalist synth tones into groove-riddled leftfield club tracks, heavy low end and bright highs, seven-second minimalist patterns and explosive live performances.
Each new N.M.O. release brings with it a new interpretation of what the duo means by “military space techno project,” their “as strict as possible” mantra and the N.M.O. acronym, which has ranged from New Mexico Occult, Navngitt Mønster Opptog and Natalia Martínez Ordóñez to Nassau Molasses Office while the duo's rave-y new incarnation, DaF, currently stands for Deutsch am Fuß and/or '70s post-punks Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft. N.M.O.'s formidable percussionist Morten J. Olsen, also known for acoustic quartet The Pitch, heavy musique concrete duo MoHa! and experimental chamber rock band Ultralyd, crafts bass music like a sculptor, changing perceptions of what makes a driving club beat. Rubén Patiño, sometimes going by Pato, uses his background in electronic music and fine arts to balance organic radical creation with aberrant machine frequencies. He's also collaborated with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros’ project EVOL, also on Powell's Diagonal Records. As N.M.O., the artists stretch the definitions of electronic genres – especially when it comes to multi-tempo textures – and apply scathing humour and high-fitness performance art with abandon.
N.M.O. recently played Berlin's CTM festival, Italian experimental festival Terraforma with Norwegian singer Stine Janvin, Rewire Festival, and a frenetic Boiler Room Berlin jumping from a single synth tone and performance-art dance choreography to relentless rhythms. Live at MUTEK, they're set to therapeutically agitate at the EXPÉRIENCE Berlin outdoor showcase.
N.M.O is a 2017 participant of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, which is supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union. Presented in collaboration with CTM Festival with the support of Initiative Musik.
