Bubblin' Up: DJ Python

Brian Piñeyro fully owns his serpentine alias, slithering around fractured rhythms and leaving in his wake a dreamlike trail of twinkling arpeggios. Much has been said of his reggaeton-inspired deep house, which incorporates whispers of 1990s dembow and dancehall riddims, but Python’s cross-cultural sound easily resists any clumsy alt-Latin pigeonholing. Not averse to thumping kick drums or polychromatic percussions, he’ll let his leading sounds simmer gently over a foggy mist of synths—his tropical rhythms taking a dip in a lush pool of narcotics.

Hailing from an Ecuadorian and Argentinian family, Piñeyro’s in-between, woozy sound speaks to his cross-cultural, highly contrasted experiences. Having grown up in Miami, where he was exposed to the burgeoning US reggaeton scene of Noriega and Luny Tunes, he was always equally drawn to the experimental, oft-melancholy electronica of Aphex Twin and the Kompakt Records stable. His multiple producer personalities—each with their own tempos and tricks—are outlets through which Piñeyro embraces his multifaced self and recontextualizes his Latinx identity. His DJ Python moniker was first unveiled on a 2016 EP for Anthony Naples’s Proibito imprint. In September of last year, Python his masterful debut album Dulce Compañia, rapidly shot him up to revelation-artist status.

Python’s recent live sets animate his offbeats and loopy breaks—rendering explicit the connective tissue that’s long been integral to this producer’s singular DNA: the glow of low-tempo, dreamy techno finding its match in the sweet, sample-infused eruptions of reggaeton and dembow.
