She is one of the participants for this year’s SónarCalling, a one-of-a-kind project by the Barcelona festival that will send her music into outer space in an attempt to establish contact with extraterrestrials.
Cora Novoa

Dark, pulsating compositions indebted to the occult but also to a wide-ranging technological curiosity. Cora Novoa’s melodic techno cuts find their happy medium between the haunting and the sublime, shaking off all foreseeable musical outcomes by dissecting new wave and synth pop patterns and thrusting the sounds into an intuitive maelstrom of modular synthesis.

The first woman to take home the prize for Best DJ of the Year at Madrid’s Vicious Music Awards in 2017 also happens to be one of Spain’s top electronic music talents. Born in Galicia but having since hopped around Berlin, Madrid and Barcelona, Novoa dabbled early on in classical flute studies, rap instrumentals and graffiti before finding her calling on the Internet, care of machine-generated music. A computer science degree and many synthesizer sessions later, she began working with Ableton as one of their official trainers, a relationship that stretches back to her days working at Madrid’s esteemed microFusa DJ store. Novoa also contributes to El Laberinto, a Spanish national radio program, and has overseen her own independent record label and a streetwear-oriented clothing brand, Seeking The Velvet, since 2014. She’s released albums and EPs on Henry Saiz’s Natura Sonoris and John Talabot’s Hivern Discs, and has toured extensively throughout Latin America and Europe. In April of this year, her dream-teaming with English synthpop artist Little Boots was featured on the latter’s all-electronic, all-femme-produced new EP, Burn.

After the Sónar festival sends her analog sounds into outer space early in the summer, the multidisciplinary artist will touch down in Montréal. She will premiere her all-modular and machine drum live set, full of romantic textures and dark drones, on the occasion of her forthcoming album, Mental Diary.
