With her hiccupping sense of rhythm but also a knack for collaging disparate musical transgressions into a high-powered and emotive soundtrack of bloops, thwacks and thumps—pronounced “ca‧ño‧ta” and meaning left-landed in Portuguese—this divergent thinker incorporates dembow, noise, hardcore, tarraxo, industrial and baile funk into her punchy beatmaker’s brew.
The border-busting moniker of Sophie MacArthur, a Canadian with Brazilian roots, Canhota has made it her mission to ride roughshod over musical purists. Her red-hot live sets set eardrums ablaze with their reckless genre permutations and coalescing combos of ambient samples and complex, rambunctious textures. Besides releasing her Ruff Trax EP on Safe & Sound, the digital label she runs alongside Aso Ani, Canhota also connects with Montréal listeners weekly, via the CKUT show Venus Radio, which highlights racialized, female, gender non-conforming and queer music production.
Making her debut MUTEK performance, Canhota will draw from her past in endurance sports, church camp, and the queer and punk scenes, to dispense a visceral live set built around the physical manifestations of discipline and catharsis, conformity and deviance.
