Diversity statements, codes of conduct, policy directives, special programs, legislation: governments and institutions, in particular, have the power to make progressive structural changes to the way that dependant organizations conduct their business, and ultimately affect social norms. Given their size and bureaucratic processes, they are often slow to respond to cultural and political shifts on the ground. Recently, however, there has been a groundswell of initiatives coming from above that are fundamentally altering the way that projects get funded and how official positions are articulated—resulting in a spicy cocktail of both celebration and criticism. This panel brings together examples from different sectors and countries where actions related to equity and diversity are working to engineer and engender change.
