Days before jumping into the holiday season, MUTEK.ES announces the second round of artists confirmed for its 4th edition, which will run February 6 – 9, 2013 in Barcelona, Spain
Kuedo & MFO [UK] / Laurel Halo [US] / Nautiluss [CA] / Andrés Bucci [CL] / Cardopusher [VL] / Clip! [ES] / Nikka & Alba G. Corral [ES] / Boris Chimp 504 [PT] / DOSF [ES] / XTRNGR [ES] / Astroboyz [ES].
Several new international highlights join the festival lineup as debut appearances. Making his name as part of British dubstep duo Vex’d along with Roly Porter, Jamie Teasedale’s work as Kuedo has drawn frequent comparisons to the sweeping, arpeggiated synth passages of Vangelis. Performing the Barcelona premiere of his live A/V show, Kuedo’s glassy synth superhighways and trap-inspired rhythmic patterns swirl over visuals by Berlin-based video collective MFO.
Acclaimed for her nuanced songwriting, rhythmic complexity, and unique singing voice, Laurel Halo has been electrifying clubs in the US and Europe with sharp, dancefloor driven live sets. Wrapping up a busy 2012 year that saw Halo release two EPs to critical acclaim, the artist makes her Barcelona debut while performing at the MUTEK.ES. Opening Concert at new venue Station Barcelona, located inside the spectacular Estación Francia, Barcelona’s international train station.
Over at the Nitsa / 2 room, Nautiluss, Cardopusher, and Clip! take over the Red Bull Music Academy stage for a night that shifts through several faces of the bass continuum. An alumnus of the RBMA stage at MUTEK Montreal and former member of Thunderheist (Big Dada), Nautiluss constantly strives for the perfect combination of synthetic and organic textures. Joining him is Venezuela-born Barcelona-based producer Cardopusher, whose journeys between dubstep, tropical bass, UK funky, electro, house, and various points in-between have been published on varied labels such as Hyperdub, Tigerbeat6, Lo Dubs and Car Crash Set to name a few Barcelona native, classically trained musician, and RBMA alumnus Clip! rounds out the RBMA stage program with his hyperactive shifts between UK garage, house, bass, and juke.
With an ever-growing mandate to support Spain’s diverse local scene, MUTEK.ES is proud to present even more Spanish artists in this year’s program. Following independent MUTEK.ES debuts last year, artists Nikka and Alba G. Corral have joined forces to create an interactive version of a collaborative project entitled ¨The Space in Between¨. Another audiovisual performance comes from compatriots DOSF, whose ongoing exploration of the dialogue between sound and image takes shape as “Uno”, a work where audio passages seed visuals and vice versa. Upcoming artist XTRNGR, who mutates the worlds of ambient and glitch, and the house-oriented Astroboyz, who works in both analogue and digital mediums, round out the local talent confirmed thus far.
In parallel to supporting Spanish talent, MUTEK.ES also continues to foment links with Latin America via performances by the above-mentioned newcomer, Cardopusher [VL], as well as veteran Chilean producer turned Berlin resident Andrés Bucci, known for his ever-versatile and unpredictable live sets suffused with analogue 808 and 909 grooves.
Rounding out this second announcement are Portugal’s Boris Chimp 504, who will perform a live A/V show as well as present an audio installation called ¨Non Human Device¨, based on their live performance. The installation invites the public to create audiovisual signals by interacting with a touch-activated “non human machine interface”. The above artists and projects are of course coming in addition to the international highlights announced in November:
Jeff Mills [US] / Raime [UK] / Vessel [UK] / Monolake [DE] / Jon Hopkins [UK] / The Mole [CA] / Dewalta [DE] / Le Révélateur [CA]
