Marcel Dettmann, Andy Stott, Deadbeat & Tikiman, 10 Years Hyperdub & more
December 11, 2013
Celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2014, MUTEK.ES, the Barcelona branch of the namesake International Festival for Digital Creativity and Electronic Music continues the MUTEK family’s global anniversary year, following a stellar 10th edition of MUTEK.MX in Mexico City this past October 2013, and leading up to the highly anticipated 15th anniversary edition of the original MUTEK Montreal festival that will take place end of May 2014.
After a busy year that included collaborations with Berlin Atonal, ClubtoClub Torino, and its regular Soirée MUTEK events in its home city, MUTEK.ES is preparing to launch the Barcelona festival season by changing its dates to March 5 – 8, 2014 instead of its usual February slot, a move that also makes room for more outdoor and family programs within the festival. This edition’s festival headquarters will once again take over the Convent Sant Augustí, a building that mixes historic architecture with modern, modular spaces. The Convent will serve as the festival’s main information point, offering a welcoming environment to meet up with friends old and new, and will house the festival’s Digi_Section daytime conference program (Q&A sessions, workshops, demos). MUTEK.ES also returns to long-time partners Nitsa Club and Moog for its night-time program, with exciting new venues and special collaborations for the festival’s A/Visions audiovisual performance series to be announced shortly.
For its 5th edition, MUTEK.ES will be carefully concocting a mix of artists and projects that have stood for their performances at MUTEK editions in Barcelona, in Mexico, or in Montreal over the last five years. The MUTEK.ES 2014 festival program thus aims to transmit the spirit and aims of the MUTEK network over its 15 years of building bridges between creativity and technology. In this spirit, the MUTEK.ES team is excited to announce its first batch of confirmed artists:
Nils Frahm [DE] / Marcel Dettmann [DE] / Andy Stott [UK] / Deadbeat & Tikiman [CA/DOM]
10 Years of Hyperdub feat. Kode 9 [UK], Laurel Halo [US], Scratcha DVA [UK]
Announced as a teaser this past November 2013, Nils Frahm will be presenting his new, highly-acclaimed album Spaces (Erased Tapes Records, 2013), as a mix of classically-informed performance and new live set which was debuted at MUTEK in Montreal this past May 2013. Having performed one year earlier at MUTEK.MX in Mexico, Frahm´s appearance in Barcelona closes a loop in the global MUTEK program. Frahm’s concerts have been regularly selling out, and his appearance at MUTEK.ES will be no exception, so be sure to stay tuned as we announce information on individual event tickets shortly.
A resident of Berlin’s infamous Berghain since the club’s opening in 1999, Marcel Dettmann will perform in support of his second album Dettmann II (Ostgut Ton, 2013), bringing his uncompromising techno, as brutal as it is danceable, to Barcelona in one of his very rare appearances in the city.
Modern Love label mainstay Andy Stott has relentlessly veered from deep techno to broken garage, slow house and hyperactive footwork over his various releases, most recently landing with the much-lauded Luxury Problems in 2012. Having performed as part of several MUTEK showcases, and most recently at MUTEK 2013 in Montreal, Stott’s live performances are as versatile and unpredictable as his releases.
A MUTEK regular from the earliest days and a master of live performance technique, Deadbeat returns to MUTEK.ES to share his latest low-end frequency research with special guest Tikiman (aka Paul St. Hilaire). The duo appears with a new live show in support of a forthcoming album due on BLKRTZ in March 2014. A regular and tireless workshop leader, Deadbeat will also host MUTEK.ES’ technological workshop series, to be announced in early 2014.
Artists Kode9 and Laurel Halo have also put in multiple appearances within the MUTEK network over the years, becoming festival favourites for their groundbreaking performances. Appearing as part of a special 10 Years of Hyperdub showcase, Halo will perform in support of her latest album Chance of Rain (Hyperdub, 2013), while label head Kode9 will continue to explore the hardcore continuum through one of his famed DJ sets. Labelmate Scratcha DVA joins the night, pushing UK funky’s rhythmic patterns to the extreme and bringing a chaotic tilt to the dancefloor with sounds from his most recent release Mad Hatter EP, described by DVA himself as a little “WTF”.
As always, MUTEK.ES will also continue to strengthen its mandate to support Barcelona and Spain’s diverse, local scene by presenting emerging local talent, to be announced in January.
Stay tuned as we announce the second wave of MUTEK.ES 2014 artists as well as information on an expanded daytime Digi_Section conference program in the coming weeks.
