NICOLAS JAAR, ROBERT HENKE, AUDION, VOICES FROM THE LAKE, DINOS CHAPMAN Lead the First Wave of International Headliners
February 17, 2014
Celebrating their 15th anniversaries in style, Montréal's high profile digital arts festival Elektra, and electronic music and digital creativity institution MUTEK, have joined forces, synchronized their dates and created one powerhouse combined event this year. To accommodate their ambitious plans, this two-festival-in-one affair, christened EM15, has extended itself by a day to make room for its shared agenda. Now starting on Tuesday May 27, programming runs six days until Sunday June 1, and will feature more than 100 Canadian and international artists, and several new venues.
Extraordinarily this year, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal opens its esteemed spaces to act as the nerve centre and main headquarters for festival activities. This new partnership allows EM15 to showcase artists and projects with strong reputations for sidestepping trends and enthralling audiences with exceptional live performances. This occupation of the MACM underlines a shared commitment to seeking out innovation in digital art and music, and taking risks in ways that only specialized, non-commercial festivals can.
This initial list represents the tip of the EM15 iceberg and will only grow richer and more diverse in the coming weeks, as a multitude of Canadian artists and other special projects are revealed. For now, here are the first names and broad contours of what will be a bold and multi-textured leap forward:
ARCHIE PELAGO-LIVE (US) / AUDION-LIVE (US) / BEN FROST A U R O R A-LIVE (AU) / DINOS CHAPMAN-LIVE (UK) / DONATO DOZZY-DJ (IT) / FLUXION-LIVE (GR) / HEATSICK-LIVE (UK) / HOLLY HERNDON-LIVE (US) / MAX COOPER-LIVE (UK) / NICOLAS JAAR [FROM SCRATCH]-LIVE (CL/US) / MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH-LIVE (DE/NL) / MOVE D-DJ (DE) / ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER-LIVE (US) / PINCH-LIVE (UK) / RASHAD BECKER-LIVE (DE) / ROBERT HENKE-LIVE (DE) / SHACKLETON-LIVE (UK) / VOICES FROM THE LAKE-LIVE (IT)
From the anticipated return of NICOLAS JAAR, with the long form improvisational project FROM SCRATCH, and BEN FROST with his exclusive new live show, A U R O R A, to the North American premieres of British contemporary art star DINOS CHAPMAN with his audiovisual show Luftbobler (presented in collaboration with the DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art), the laser guided spectacle Lumière, by ROBERT HENKE and Greek dub-techno stalwart FLUXION, there's also Canadian premieres for an ambitious new A/V performance by MATTHEW DEAR'S AUDION moniker, and Italian duo VOICES FROM THE LAKE. Representing the heady avant garde of British bass music, rare North American appearances from SHACKLETON and PINCH contrast with up and coming New York jazz-techno trio ARCHIE PELAGO and the epic live jams of last year's discovery JUJU & JORDASH, as MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH with MOVE D. UK techno innovator MAX COOPER visits MUTEK for the first time with his astonishing and sweeping productions, as does producer and engineer RASHAD BECKER whose experimental and refined creations garnered critical adulation with the release of his recent album. American vocal alchemist and digital sorceress HOLLY HERNDON makes her Canadian debut, and widescreen synth-scaper, ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER will present a dazzling and conceptual audiovisual dimension.

ELEKTRA + MUTEK = EM15
Recognized as unique events within the multidisciplinary field of cutting edge contemporary digital creation, electronic music, new media and culture, this synchronisation of Elektra and MUTEK brings a new energy to Montréal. In 2010 the two festivals were awarded - ex aequo - the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal in the "Digital Arts" category, a distinction that set the stage for this collaboration and emphasizes the maturity of the Montréal digital arts scene. EM15 also represents the international heart of this year’s Printemps Numérique. The last 15 years have been extremely dynamic for technologically driven art and music, and through this new alliance, festivalgoers can expect an expansive and multidimensional experience.
