Second wave of artists announced for MUTEK.ES

Just over six weeks out from the 6th edition of MUTEK in Barcelona, to be held at various and new venues around the city from March 4 to 7, the festival is excited to share the latest additions to its already brimming program:

ROBERT HENKE presents LUMIÈRE II (DE) / PANTHA DU PRINCE (DE) / THE PERSUADER (JESPER DALHBACK) (DE) / VERONICA VASICKA (US) / MAOTIK & METAMETRIC (CA) / WOULG (CA) / REYKJAVIK 606 (ES) / OLDE GODS (ES) / SAU POLER (ES) / PEDRO VIAN (ES) / DER PANTHER (ES)

With this year’s focus on immersive and visionary audiovisual works, the festival is delighted to be presenting the recently refined and upgraded version of ROBERT HENKE’s spectacular work for lasers and light, Lumiére II. Based on self written software, this more complex iteration of the work still uses high power lasers to draw complex morphing shapes and connect points in space. A Barcelona debut, each performance is a unique real time exploration of synchronicity and divergence, of light and darkness at the limits of perception, and promises an extraordinary experience for audiences. Part of the marquee A/VISIONS series, these programs, along with the final PLAY lineup on Saturday, offer exceptional opportunities to explore a panorama of contemporary minglings of sight and sound.

Other significant international acts just added to the lineup, include a rare solo appearance from Hendrik Weber’s PANTHA DU PRINCE. He’ll be performing new material from his forthcoming album along with old favourites at Nitsa on Saturday night. Jesper Dahlback’s long running cult persona THE PERSUADER, which dates back to the late 90s, makes a Spanish premiere at this year’s edition with a brand new live show, which anticipates the release of a brand new album titled Skärgärd, in 2015 . The closing slot of the entire festival goes to American curator, musician and DJ VERONICA VASICKA. Known for her unearthing and compiling of long lost DIY synth and electronic artists for her Minimal Wave label, she also runs the new artist label, Cititrax, while spinning an eclectic mix of groovy industrial, mutant house and modern techno as a live DJ, all over the world.

ESTRELLA DAMM PRESENT THE FINAL DAY + EXPERIENCE @ FABRICA DAMM

MUTEK.ES is proud to announce that many of the artists mentioned above will be performing on Saturday, March 7 under the banner of a very special new partnership with Barcelona’s premier brewing company ESTRELLA DAMM. An entire day of concerts and activities will be presented by Estrella Damm, including an extra special, free of charge EXPERIENCE program inside (and outside) of their state of the art venue.  An exclusive space open only to collaborators and partners, the Fabrica Damm will feature Q&As during the day, installations, an exterior mapping project that gets underway at sundown, and the closing PLAY program. A venue known for its amazing acoustics and immaculate programming, having hosted a range of musical events and multimedia projects, (including work by the Moment Factory), the Fabrica Damm provides the context for two A/V projects.  REYKJAVIK 606, a local act whose profile and renown is in ascent thanks to widespread acclaim for their debut album From…To.. (2014), will debut a work that mixes their warm abstract and immersive sound with an equally enveloping visual presentation accompanied by INESFERA´s images. Joining the bill, young Quebec artist WOULG debuts Ring Buffer, which explores data-bending by modelling sound in 3D. In his alchemical A/V universe, sounds are sculpted in 3D modelling software using algorithms, and then converted using image to audio mapping. This is not to be missed ingenuity!

THE QUEBEC AXIS

Bridging and deepening its connections to MUTEK in Montréal this year, the Barcelona edition highlights the work of several Québec artists with particular aptitudes in audiovisual creation. Along with WOULG, HERMAN KOLGEN (announced earlier) displays his performative and installation sides in several different appearances, while MAOTIK & METAMETRIC present Durations and join ROBERT HENKE on the bill at Barts Theatre on Saturday. An accomplished visual artist who has conceived conceptual A/V pieces for domes and many other formats, MAOTIK forges an audio reactive and geometric relationship with the sounds of METAMETRIC, who draws his inspiration and his electroacoustic and granular palette from Morton Feldman’s Durations 1-5.

A SPANISH AND CATALAN CORE

Along with REYKJAVIK 606, who performed last year as KINO INTERNACIONAL, a highlight for many, MUTEK.ES continues to underline its commitment to Spanish and Catalan talent, making them central elements of its programming.

A showcase of local talent will come toghether toghether on Friday night´s Nocturne program.  OLDE GODS, the local duo of Guillamino & JMII have been steadily building their reputation with a signature blend of “analog indebted house jams and mystery ambience.” They appear in the second room at Nitsa night while TALABOMAN take the main stage. SAU POLER, a well known quantity in Barcelona, who also DJs, will present his new EP of synth led pop concoctions, Paradoxes of Progress which he has been road testing on a recent tour of Europe opening up for CHET FAKER; and PEDRO VIAN, formerly of  the duo Aster. All of these artists express something particular about Barcelona’s crossover, pop meets electronic sensibility, and reach out to new audiences willing to move effortlessly between these poles.

Meanwhile, mysterious, willfully anonymous Madrid outfit, DER PANTHER perform their psychedelic pieces completely cloaked inside a cube of projections. Mixing guitars and synths, their sound lies somewhere beyond Animal Collective and Mice Parade and their latest album lands appropriately on the Primavera Sound label. Expect a strange and transportive performance.

PHONOS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCE A RESIDENCY PROGRAM AS PART OF THE FESTIVAL

Barcelona’s Phonos Foundation, established in 1974, promotes cultural activities around music technology. Working closely with the Music Technology Group (MTG) of the Pompeu Fabra University (well-known for projects like Reactable or Vocaloid), Phonos continues to promote social and cultural projects that foster the creation and diffusion of music by technological means. Phonos marks it’s 40th anniversary this year with an exhibition at the Museo de la Musica of Barcelona called, Phonos: 40 anys de música electrónica en Barcelona.  Offering an overview of Barcelona’s electronic music history through instruments that have been created or used by the Foundation — everything from synths, tape recorders, samplers and new technology – which can be viewed and also used for listening.

To celebrate its ongoing mission, Phonos and MUTEK.ES are teaming up to provide hands-on access for 3 days (from 23-25 february) to a local artist to explore what the exhibition has to offer. One of the ‘star’ instruments to be used is a key synthesizer from the 80s: the RSF Kobol modular synth. To apply for this residency fill out the form in the LINK before February 13th

As part of the official and free MUTEK.ES program, the winning applicant will take part in a presentation at the prestigious Auditori of Barcelona along with local artist Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, who has already been working for months with the same synth. Along with a guided tour, audiences are invited to contribute to this unique soundtrack, March 5 at the Museo de la Música - L'Auditori de Barcelona.
