Roundtable 2 : Conceptual Challenges in Virtual Reality Creation - NFB XP Results

Co-moderated by Sandra Rodriguez, Fellow at the MIT - Open Documentary Lab, and Louis-Richard Tremblay, Producer at the NFB Interactive Studio, this roundtable will present the results of NFB XP, an all-star female workshop exploring the conceptual challenges in virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality organized by the National Film Board of Canada in collaboration with MUTEK and the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

Giving female digital creators a forum in which to meet and connect, NFB XP took place on May 27 and 28 in an exceptional venue, the Never Apart studio in Montréal, and brought together 16 talented women creators from Canada, the US, the UK and the Netherlands, representing various disciplines and whose artistic work is at the centre of the current explosion of VR. One of the objectives of the workshop was to continue to explore the potential uses, the production issues and the narrative content development of VR, in addition to creating a real encounter between these innovative artists, their ideas and their expertise. This collaborative experience allowed the craft to influence the language that is being created in a fast-growing field. Through this initiative, the NFB also wanted to encourage other female creators to immerse themselves in these new technologies and new approaches and make them their own, as they are still underrepresented in this area.
