Creating dynamic visual projections at the intersection of sound, video and performance, Nelly-Eve Rajotte transmits the immersive, trancelike, and anxiety-producing elements of the natural world directly into our minds. Her audiovisual works of extreme "end spaces" (from sprawling architecture to endless frozen tundra) cause both physical and emotional reactions in the viewer, offering a world-piercing gaze that awes and unsettles at the same time.
While Rajotte's practice began with an art history degree in the mid-90's, her desire for hands-on artmaking led to a masters degree in visual arts at UQAM School of Visual and Media Arts. With the goal of "imagining a room where you can feel things," Rajotte began to integrate sound into her emerging body of work via a digital sound editing degree at Concordia. Exploring ideas of how to navigate and manipulate the physical states and psychological perceptions of the viewer, her work transports you amongst sprawling desert landscapes and desolate northern patches of forest. Recognition for her dynamic footage has poured in worldwide, with her work shown at the Moscow International Film Festival, the International short film festival of Berlin, and Korea's EXiS experimental cinema series. Rajotte has also wielded her work in a collaboration with DJ Mini, where her real-time edits to video footage cause the landscapes to twitch, disintegrate and collapse into her collaborator’s pulsing wall of sound.
This year, Rajotte will be showcasing Rückenfigur, a new A/V performance inspired by romanticism and the chalk cliffs of Rügen, a German island in the Baltic Sea. Using a modular synthesizer and crashing layers of reverb to generate motion-filled waves of sound, Rajotte will create a sound and sight-scape that draws you into a consciousness-bending sensory experience, dropping you in the midst of an immersively overwhelming physical and mental space.
