Alicia Hush and Jesse Morrison have one foot in the Toronto electronic community, where they're involved with Hushlamb productions (radio and events), and the other firmly and recently planted in Montreal. In both locales, they strive to create space and energy for vibrant independent creativity. As Yes M'aam, the duo help open the festival during EXPERIENCE 1, May 29th at 2-22.
Alas, the sweetness of a Montreal summer. Just 7 months ago we packed up our Toronto belongings in search of new energy, sound and soul. Our destination was a no-brainer though, and naturally we plopped ourselves in the city where some of our favourite artists roam and where the music mecca, MUTEK, resides.
Saying goodbye to Toronto was a teary experience for us. It is the birth place of the Hushlamb family and is what brought us together in the beginning. There are some incredible music warriors over there in T.O. giving their heart and soul to the betterment of the scene. Making pals with the StudioFeed crew (behind the Sound in Motion festival) has been an incredibly positive and enlightening experience for us. It's not every day you get to hang with a group of people doing selfless acts of kindness for the growth of a city.
Yes Ma'am was born one year ago. After a few back to back DJ sets it was apparent that we both shared the same love of get down-get weird-and have fun music. Both of us also sharing the same appreciation of a good live set, we decided to try one together. Yes Ma'am is stompy, quirky and often humorous, as we try and combine the forces of badass and brainiac. Our love affair with booty house and ghetto tech has surely left an imprint on our style.
Playing live as a duo is a new experience for both of us and so we're still sorting out the bumps. What started off as carefully planned sets and timed clip launching, has evolved into a full on jam where we improvise as we go. It takes a little communication but the end result is much more satisfying for us and we believe that flow transpires to the floor.
And so now here we are, on this brand new adventure together, soaking up all of the beauty Montreal has to offer, and thanking our lucky stars for the chance to strut our stuff at this years MUTEK festival.
