Kara-Lis Coverdale & LXV Boiler Room x MUTEK MX Live Set

As at-home surrounded by wires and synths as she is before a pipe organ, Kara-Lis Coverdale blurs the lines between human and machine in multiple channel, multi-timbral collages that conjure symphonies of the sacred, profane and transcendent while navigating new ecologies with an ease we cannot yet comprehend. Informed by a Masters degree in musicology and composition and an ingrained love of hip-hop and rap, sampling, and capsized New Age, Coverdale’s music mobilizes traditional vocal and instrumental sources into surreal dreams of earthly existence.

Along with her evolving solo work, Coverdale has collaborated with LXV (musician David Sutton) on their Sirens album, contributed keyboards and piano to recordings by Tim Hecker and Lee Bannon, and has produced for How To Dress Well. Live, Coverdale draws on her recordings and compositions (her most recent a commission for electronics and orchestra for Vanemuine Theatre in Estonia), layering sensorial electronics, pipe organ and piano, reverberating drones and bass, deliberately leaving space for improvisation inspired by the moment.

Her live sets are consistently met with acclaim, including last year's at MUTEK Montréal and Unsound in Toronto and Krakow with visual artist Marcel Weber aka MFO. Coverdale unveils a new live performance specifically commissioned for MUTEK Montréal: VoxU, inspired by the breathless, limitless, and ultimately synthetic voice expressed through the sonic technology of the pipe organ.
