Purpose and politics resolve in bold comfort as Mexican Jihad embeds a vital darkness into his multi-genre, cross culture mixes. Provocative and boundary pushing, he weaves deep rhythms and synth rushes into hip hop, pop, techno and his N.A.A.F.I labelmates' lateral electronic explorations.

An architect originally from Oaxaca, Bustamante cofounded the Mexico City-based N.A.A.F.I collective with his university friend Tomás Davó (a.k.a. Fausto Bahia) in 2010 as a boundary-pushing, community-cultivating offset to Latin American millennial DJ culture. Alongside producers Lao and Paul Marmota they co-run the label and subvert the city's club scene with one-off nights in cantinas and galleries, weekenders on beaches, even a residency at the the Museo Jumex and a vogue battle in a sports bar, every location as unexpected and freeform as their DJ lineups. Like his label cohorts, Mexican Jihad breaks down Latin American identity through “peripheral rhythms,” a radically local approach that plays with and breaks musical, cultural and political limitations within Mexico and along international borderlines. His latest DJ sets are a calculated clash of genres and references, pitting perreo and pop against hip hop deviations and independent Mexican electronic.

Mexican Jihad's music emblemized the 2014 Material Art Fair and its N.A.A.F.I afterparties in the D.F., and more recently he's played Unsound in Krakow and toured Europe with the squad. His DJ set will reveal new N.A.A.F.I tracks and his latest network of listening obsessions, bound only by underground rumbles and an audacious handling of trends.
