Fuelled by a desire to express complex ideas and emotions through a hybrid language of music, science and visualization, hyper-prolific producer Max Cooper absorbs himself in collaborative projects years in the making. On his earthly musical plane, he crafts cohesive narratives out of abstract concepts and scientific proof, meteoric synth loops and modern-classical melodies.
Over the past two decades, Cooper branched out from experimenting solely with the dance floor to releasing dozens of eclectic EPs, mixes and remixes, his innovative musicality and artistic curiosity balanced with a DJ’s performative intuition. As with his 2014 album Human and its accompanying thematic visuals, Cooper's new project, Emergence, blends scientific concepts with organic artistry in an abstract narrative exploring how technology intersects with human biology. Three years in the making, the Emergence A/V show saw Cooper collaborating with artists, scientists and mathematicians on multiple visual styles, including real data visualization, and composing music influenced by neo-classical, techno, post-rock and IDM to express the beauty of natural laws and processes that build the universe, from our bodies to the stars.
For MUTEK's opening night, Cooper performs a multi-chapter version of Emergence, transporting us through a pre-big bang galaxy into his vision of a biotech future.
