After generating broad levels of enthusiasm last week upon revealing the first crop of headliners for its 13th edition, MUTEK is proud to announce an AVANT_MUTEK event in Montreal on April 19th. A one-of-a-kind exhibition for the Montreal public, this hometown thank-you event will feature international artists Pole, Demdike Stare, Jacaszek, and Miles performing in the brand-new, state-of-the-art Satosphere, which MUTEK’s unique brand of digital creativity will be occupying for the first time.
This AVANT_MUTEK event, in collaboration with the Society for Arts and Technology, serves as a prelude to the festival, giving MUTEK a golden opportunity to take full advantage of the dome – a hub for Montreal innovation – and its seemingly endless immersive potential. Over the course of the night, this “Sensorium” will present four performances that speak to the narrative breadth of the MUTEK experience. Audiences will be led through the embryonic beginnings of an A/Visions audio-visual performance from Polish ambient-classical producer Jacaszek, who arrives to Montreal courtesy of the Polish Cultural Institute of New York, to the energy and innovation of a full-fledged Nocturne, as delivered by festival veteran and dub-techno pioneer, Pole.
The lineup for the night is presented under the banner of I.C.A.S. (International Cities for Advanced Sound), a network of organizations and festivals worldwide, which will hold its next annual meeting at MUTEK_2012. In the lead-up to this important international gathering, the program for the AVANT_MUTEK night was developed in close collaboration with Unsound Festival (Krakow and New York) and Communikey (Boulder, Colorado), sharing some of the booked artists with these two partners, who will both be presenting their latest editions in late April.
JACASZEK, a pillar of Poland’s ambient scene, gets the ball rolling, accompanied by two classical instrumentalists and a visual artist. He’ll be followed by DEMDIKE STARE, the British duo of Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty, signed to the Modern Love label, and who proved to be unequivocal festival favourites at MUTEK 2010. Then, POLE’s Stefan Betke returns to his musical roots by flooding the dome with his minimal, electronic dub compositions. In February, the Berlin-based Betke delivered what was widely regarded as one of the finest performances of Berlin’s CTM Festival. The showcase continues well into the wee hours with Whittaker, who will also perform a solo set as MILES, presenting another dimension of his musical passions. Immersive visual performances by ZEF & SANTO and DIAGRAF.
