MUTEK [ES] is pleased to announce a fresh wave of confirmations for its 5th anniversary edition, which will take place March 5 – 8, 2014 in Barcelona:
1024 Architecture (FR) / Graze (CA) / Boundary (CA) / Nev.Era + Xarlene (ES) / Begun (ES) / Headbirds (ES) / Kino Internacional & Inesfera (ES) / Microfeel (AR) / Brunetto (ES) / Pau Roca (ES) DJ Fra (ES)
The MUTEK[ES] A/Visions audiovisual series sees an important addition to its programme with 1024 Architecture, a collective that stages playful explorations that survey the space between high and low-tech, sound and visuals, art and architecture. In Crise, performers François Wunschel and Fernando Favier play two newly jobless businessmen whose toxic resentment of credit crunches and cracks in the system comes alive through inspired interplay of light and sound.
New international music acts confirmed include Graze, a new project by Adam Marshall, founder and curator of the New Kanada label and producer of lush techno constructions, and Christian Andersen, initially influenced by drum‘n’ bass and metal before taking to the choppy waters at the confluence of bass music and techno. Highlighted by XLR8R as the number one newcomer act of 2013, Graze appear for their Spain premiere in support of their latest album Edges. Canadian compatriot Ghislain Poirier, who previously played in Barcelona at the BAM festival’s MUTEK stage in 2012, brings his recently debuted Boundary project, of dark, cinematic electronic music, exploring hard-hitting, minimalist soundscapes where dark timbres and complex rhythms can alter both bodies and minds. The show is presented by Red Bull Music Academy as part of the RBMA stage in the Nocturne program.
Holding an ever-growing mandate to support Spain’s diverse, local scene, MUTEK.ES is proud to once again present a large and diverse showing of Spanish artists in this year’s program. With their Presión Profunda album voted as one Spain’s top releases of 2013 in specialized media outlets, Nev.Era + Xarlene appear with their new live A/V show where Xarlene’s visual poetics, based photographs and realist imagery intertwines with the music of Nev.Era, hypnotic, subtle, and seductive without losing an insistent feeling via its underlying club sound. Microfeel premieres his new Polaroid Soundtrack album, weaving a story of a night-ride within the upper limits of the city.
A rich showing of local artists also flushes out the MUTEK.ES music program. Navigating the paths between dreampop and landscape electronica, begun, spins off a trail of acclaimed performances including Sonar, Primavera Sound and Boiler Room. begun is also presented by Red Bull Music Academy. Compatriot Headbirds, who after several EPs and remixes for artists such as Guillamino and Fur Voice, as well as an appearance on MUTEK’s stage at the BAM festival in 2012, is set to release his dancefloor-oriented house and techno adventures on Primavera Sound’s El Segell label, alongside the uplifting, dynamical sounds and visuals of Kino Internacional & Inesfera. Kompakt’s DJ Fra (a return collaborator of MUTEK ES), Pau Roca (Bons Records artist currently in high-demand for his eclectic and avant-garde tastemaking), and Brunetto take over the decks at various festival nights.
The above artists and projects are of course coming in addition to the international highlights announced in November:
Nils Frahm [DE] / Marcel Dettmann [DE] / Andy Stott [UK] / Deadbeat and Tikiman [CA/DOM]
10 Years of Hyperdub feat. Kode 9 [UK] / Laurel Halo [US] / Scratcha DVA [UK]
Stay tuned as we announce the full MUTEK.ES 2014 programme including the Digi_Section daytime conference program, in the coming weeks!
