Ten years after their MUTEK debut, we are excited to bring back the New York- based duo Matmos! For their MUTEK 2001 performance, Matmos set up a full-scale operating room to perform "A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure". Full of samples from medical procedures such as liposuctions, plastic surgeries, hearing tests and bonesaws, Matmos delighted audiences with their lighthearted treatment of this rather dark subject.
To start off the new year we have a podcast dating back to the early days of MUTEK. Performing as part of seminal record label Traum, France's Philippe Cam brought his intimate knowledge of contemporary electronic music to the festival. Exploring serial techno and cinematographic currents, his contemplative music is the perfect way to slide back into the grind after the holidays.
This is the first of several enchanting MUTEK appearances of Germany's Rechenzentrum. The audiovisual duo of Lillevaen (visuals) and Marc Weiser (music) have, over the course of ten years, created a reputation based on their modern soundtracks of depth and austerity that are expertly blended with atmospheric and rhythmic visual narratives.
With just over two weeks left to go till MUTEK_10, we break out the big guns with an ultra-rare gem from the early years: a 2001 live mix by none other than Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack!
MUTEKLIVE 010 goes back eight years to an ultra-rare live recording of Matias Aguayo and Dirk Leyer's Closer Musik, who were an early highlight from the Kompakt roster that has since set the template for how to bring techno's blood to a boil.
For the second installment of the MUTEKLIVE series, we go back eight years to rediscover Akufen , performing here as part of a Traum showcase, one year before his career hit the stratosphere with his Force Inc. debut, My Way .
