An indelible force as producer, DJ and tastemaker, Michael Mayer is also one of the main ambassadors of Germany’s electronic music scene. As co-founder of Cologne’s, Kompakt imprint, Mayer is one of the leading architects of a trusted techno empire housing numerous sub-labels, a strong distribution division - which handles dozens of Europe’s best electronic imprints, and a world-renowned record shop. Besides his stellar remixes and legendary sets (a sweltering 2003 Micro_MUTEK set and an equally unhinged 2007 Nocturne come to mind), Mayer the producer, obviously fancies the 4/4 kick drum, but doesn’t just aim for the dance floor jugular. After an eight-year solo production hiatus, his second LP, Mantasy (2012), with its sweeping titular track – a muscular and moody Italo disco number – reminded us that Mayer is still a heavyweight. To celebrate Kompakt’s 20th anniversary, MUTEK is proud to welcome back the perennial poster boy for pop-inflected techno.
Michael Mayer ranks among the most prodigal DJ's working in electronic music scene today. Those fortunate enough to have attended Mayer's last Montreal appearance at a 2003 MICRO_MUTEK event were witness to one of this city's sweatiest, most energetic and adventurous DJ sets in this city's recent memory. As a producer, Mayer fashions austere Euro-chic house tracks (Privat, Love Is Stronger than Pride, and Lovefood are perfect examples) that couple elements from eighties electro-pop and trance with his own signature frosty bass-lines. As a tastemaker, his double-shot mix albums, the Immer and Speicher series, as well as the stellar Fabric 13 mix, are still considered classics of leftfield house music to this day. In 2004, he issued his debut album, Touch. An uncompromised force as producer and DJ, Mayer's role in modern electronic music is considered exponentially pivotal for the role he plays behind the scenes. As the co-founder of Cologne's Kompakt imprint, Mayer is one of the leading architects behind a veritable techno empire housing numerous sub-labels, a strong distribution division which handles over seventy of Europe's best electronic imprints, and a world-renowned record shop. His appearance at this year's festival will undoubtedly emerge as one of summer's biggest highlights. Not to be missed.
