Signal (DE)

Frank Bretschneider, Byetone and Noto form Signal! Their friendship, their many years of collaboration and complicity and their shared commune of designs permits a singular and effective hybridizing of their styles; behold three visions seeking an equal rhythmic audiovisual space, synthetic and pure. For these in-demand artists, each with his own individual trajectory, the opportunity to find them all in the same place at once is few and far between, so much so that a performance by Signal is indeed rare and one-of-a-kind. Therefore, MUTEK is particularly pleased to have provoked the alignment that will yield the first performance from Signal in over two years!

Signal, is made up of Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Frank Bretschneider (Komet), and Olaf Bender (Byetone), the three men behind the Raster Noton label. The group was established in 1998 in Chewnitz, Germany to combine the individual influences and skills of their members. Unlike their solo projects, Signal is rather devoted to a free live improvisation concept using some basic sound elements, creating a wall of noise on top of a plain straightforward  rhythm.

Resume of the piece:

"Combi Vision” is an absolute trove of percussive tensions and frequency driven subtlety. It is essentially a collection of various studio improvisations recorded in the last year and still unreleased. There is a real sense of perpetual evolution and coiled tightness to the pulsating rhythmic programming, while the subtle sheets of noise that fill the vast void behind the beats compete against the rhythm and their own sonic purity for a higher state of energy -- a constant flux of tension and release.
