Essaie Pas

Essaie Pas (CA)

WHO: Montréal-based musicians and producers Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau
STYLE: Punk-styled minimal wave, moody techno-electro, cinematic EBM
LATEST: Demain Est Une Autre Nuit (2016), Danse sociale single (2015)
LABELS: DFA, Teenage Menopause, Malditos, Atelier Ciseaux
MORE: Created the soundtrack to short film Frequencies – The Music of League of Legends, about the popular multiplayer game’s music composers
MUTEKs: Montréal: Marie Davidson solo, 2014; Davidson with Les Momies de Palerme, 2012; Davidson with DKMD, 2012

The Montréal underground comes up for air – but only at night – in Essaie Pas. Prolific collaborator and solo artist Marie Davidson and producer Pierre Guerineau merge their cool toned vocals and minimal keyboards into a dark, urgent techno-disco.

Since the husband-and-wife duo began recording together as a band at now defunct DIY studio space La Brique in 2011, Essaie Pas has invoked hand clapping Kraftwerk robots to rub up against French New Wave scores, bluesy art rock vocals and echo chamber arpeggiation – not distant relatives to the sound of Davidson’s debut solo album Perte d'identité. That album divulged the breadth of Davidson’s style, encompassing darkwave analog synthesizers and sequencers, menacingly detached vocals and even her familial links to the outsider performance art of Montréal’s Phénomena Festival.

As Davidson’s work has expanded into genre bending performative productions driven by beats and her own incisive voice, Essaie Pas has travelled a parallel axis – one co-lead by Guerineau’s discerning production and engineering artistry (as leant to the likes of Dirty Beaches and Femminielli) towards the very-DFA, club-centric direction heard on their new album. Following an extensive European tour, Essaie Pas harnesses strobe-lit dark techno impulses in their debut for MUTEK.
