If strangeness had a flavor, Aïsha Devi’s music could very much give you a taste of it. Her bass-inspired electronica melted in vapes of faraway echos creates a one of a kind sound unwilling to ravel for a classical structure. The swiss-born, nepalese-tibetan artist and founder of the prolific label Danse Noire navigates that easily through beats and influences that her tracks will leave you with both a meditative mind and an exalted, thundering feeling.

MORE: Is a classically trained soprano vocalist; leant her voice to Felix Da Housecat tracks under her Kate Wax moniker; Devi created the esoteric Geneva-based label Danse Noire in 2013, launching it with her Aura 4 Everyone EP, an exploration of machines in the realm of meditation,

If anyone could infuse club music with harmonic mantras wired through machine mastery, it’s Aïsha Devi. Her synths, drum machines and software aren’t simply a channel for exceptional rhythms and melody, but for self-expression in parallel with her intense and riveting vocals – she experiments with her voice, contorting it, elongating notes, singing Eastern scales and drones, at times raging into ritualistic chanting.

In her latest musical inventions, Devi takes pages from her own Nepalese-Tibetan-Swiss heritage, Bangladeshi poetry, physics and bass music to make provocative metaphysical, introspective tracks. Her recent Conscious Cunt EP wears her politics on its sleeve, forefronting not only her meditation practice but "sluts, awareness, death, and women in a patriarchal society… enlightenment, violence, resistance, mothers, daughters, consciousness, Guy Debord, Vedas, and eternity." Her intimate follow up album, Of Matter and Spirit, travels further into the spiritual realm, inspired by her grandmother’s Nepalese and Indian roots and conversations with her physicist grandfather about sound, science and spirituality.

After emerging as a highlight at this year’s CTM festival in Berlin, Devi presents Of Matter and Spirit live at MUTEK, reshaping her voice in her own sung words, machine made sounds and an interpretation of a poem by Bangladeshi poet Kishwar Naheed. She is joined by EMILE BARRET, live playing a video game he created for her album, which also inlcudes images and source material by visual artist TIANZHUO CHEN.

Aisha Devi is a 2015 alumni of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, which is supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union.

Presented in collaboration with Rokolectiv Festival.
