A propulsive, expressive energy immediately takes hold as Surgeon and Lady Starlight fuse raw techno extracted live from their parallel machines – an improvised experiment in two distinctive performers not holding back. Performative without posturing, cohesive yet driven by an elated sense of freedom, the duo conspires on full-spectrum resonance.
In his long and celebrated career, Child has repeatedly renewed industrial techno with clever infusions of dub, funk and jazz, delved into music's spiritual essence, tapped into drone-heavy experimental techno in the jungle, and crafted hybrid modular-DJ festival circuit sets. Throughout his stylistic and technical transformations, from older hardware to cutting-edge software and back to a studio full of modular machines, he's remained fixated on expressing his ideas honestly in music that inspires close listening. In her own version of authenticity, Lady Starlight revamps techno with metal, glam and a gregarious stage presence cultivated over years spent as Lady Gaga's most outrageous constant collaborator: the duo hosted weekly party New York Street Revival and Trash Dance, performed in outrageous costume as Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue and joined forces on Lady Gaga's stadium show tours. After a shout out to Surgeon during her opening set in Child's hometown of Birmingham, Lady Starlight and the musician connected, colluded and found themselves in front of Gaga fans, powering through shocks of heavy techno and mystifyingly gnarly soundscapes.
Their on-stage sonic chemistry and riveting unpredictability have brought Surgeon and Lady Starlight to Berghain, Ministry of Sound, ONYX, Mysteryland, Unsound and other venues known for upholding legit originals. Their very live techno set takes top spot in Friday’s very techno NOCTURNE.
