PANEL: Interstitial Song: Between Bodies, Strings, Air and Electronics
Musicians have long combined performance styles from different traditions, and translated techniques from one instrument to another. What happens when some of the instruments are electronic and some are not? This panel will explore the experiences of musicians who work both inside and outside electronic music. As performers engage with machinery that also does some of the performing, can our bodies and ears learn to do new things? How might our ideas about music and musicians—as well as instruments—shift as electronic and non-electronic performance styles cross-pollinate? What happens when hands and bodies try to imitate electronic rhythms? What happens when we challenge the Western ideas of melody and rhythm on which so many instruments are based?
Moderated by Jonathan Sterne, with Kara-Lis Coverdale, Julia Kent, Burnt Friedman.
This activity will take place in English.
