(2016-09-16) The MUTEK A/VISIONS Cabaret

Just over 20 years ago the future founder and current Artistic Director of MUTEK, Alain Mongeau, designed the first Electronic Cabaret of audiovisual works as part of ISEA 95 (International Symposium on Electronic Art) in Montréal. These technologically-driven, avant-garde presentations galvanized a whole community of artists and creators interested in advancing work at the intersection of digital visual art and performance, leaving a profound impression, while also seeding what have become particularly Quebéc styles and manifestations of audiovisual practice. MUTEK proudly reprises this inspiration at in/future: a transformative art experience with the A/VISIONS Cabaret, featuring 4 remarkable and world renowned pieces representing at least 3 different waves/generations of Montréal-based artists operating and evolving in this contemporary and inventive field. There is a notable sense of theatricality and performance in these works, along with ingenious technical and conceptual elements, and an emphasis on the corporeal presence of the artists. As the first foray for MUTEK in Toronto, the festival aims to inspire and continue bridging creative scenes across the country.

in/future: a transformative art experience takes place at Ontario Place, on the West Island, in Toronto from September 15 to 25 and features 60+ notable Canadian and international artists all working in different mediums exploring themes of time, history, and change, as well as 40+ world music performances. The festival celebrates diversity in art and music through an 11-day conversation with Toronto about what our future could be. Each day will bring a new and unique experience featuring a different lineup of artists and musicians.
